Discovery
To better understand the problem, I made a flow to break down where the problem was. Currently, users can select a category filter where there are 0 results. This triggers a "No products found" message, which causes users to lose their search results and leads to a looping behaviour.

Problem Statement
Users are unknowingly over refining their search
Competitor Research
I analysed competitors to identify areas for improvement and to understand what they were doing right. I also broke down the journeys into flows in order to pinpoint areas where we could improve.
Further Findings
Whilst these ideas don't solve the problem statement, we are always looking for ways to impove the app and test ideas.

The M&S example makes it clear for the user to see how many products are available in the selected category.

By listing how many products are available with the search, the user is provided a clear call to action. This simplifies the user journey

Future test idea: Instead of the user having to open the filter, drop-down filters are easily accessible on the PLP.
ABC Testing
Hypothesis
We believe that limiting what the user can select whilst refining their search will prevent users from over-refining their search. This removes the error where the app displays no results.
Problem
During unmoderated testing, we observed users selecting too many filters. The app does not currently prevent users from selecting filters which refine the search to the point where no results are displayed. To recover, the user has to begin the search again. After conducting competitor research and reviewing with the design team, I have developed 2 variations to test against the control.

*As we don't currently have the application to test on the app this test was implemented on web.
